ICOC 2007 in Istanbul

The Dealer’s Fair, Academic Sessions and some Exhibitions will be held at the Swissotel. Call for academic papers ends in August 2006 and dealer booth registration starts 10 September 2006.

According to the organizers of ICOC 2007 the focus of the exhibitions will be on Anatolian weavings.

Kilims and carpets from the Vakiflar Museum will be shown in a special exhibition and the Turk ve Islam Eserleri (Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum) and Topkapi Saray museums will each stage an exhibition. The Sadberk Hanim Museum will display a special collection of chatma and kemha textiles, Ottoman textiles and garments. 

A variety of kilims, yastiks, costumes, Ottoman textiles and ikat will be included in the many private exhibitions.

Her camera captured Anatolian village scenes that no longer exist. The retrospective will provide the pictorial background for the Anatolian weaving culture. 

Four pre- and post-conference tours will explore several geographic regions of Turkey.

 “Weaving Highlights in Western Anatolia” features: the DOBAG project in Suleymankoy; special archaeological sites; silk and hemp weaving masters; feltmaking; and a visit to the Odemis and Tire weekly bazaars which specialize in the finest regional embroidery work.

“Amazing Sites of Central Anatolia” offers: Cappadocia and its open-air museums; underground cities; ancient caravanserais; mystical Konya with its museums; feltmaking workshop;and visits to Vakiflar carpet museums in Tokat and Ankara.

Capadocia ( Jozan archive photo)“Distinctly Different Southeast Anatolia” includes: Seljuk architecture; seriously old Christian monasteries; ancient city walls that are second only to China’s Great Wall; old medreses and mosques with special architectural features; very active bazaars; beehive houses in one of the oldest villages on earth; fabulous mosaics; early churches preached in by Peter and Paul; Roman tunnels and weaving villages. 

“For the Intrepid Traveler: Eastern Anatolia” includes: special carpet museum opening in Tokat; extraordinary Seljuk architecture; bustling bazaars; mesmerising panoramas of Mount Ararat and Ishak Pasha Palace and ancient Urartian ruins.
