The Road to Byzantium: Luxury Arts of Antiquity

Flax, wool, tapestry weave.This major exhibition is an extraordinary collection of classical Greek, Roman and Byzantine luxury artworks from The State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. The exhibition include finely decorated silver and gold, Athenian red-figure vases, exquisite cameos and Byzantine textiles. The exhibition will be on view at the Hermitage Rooms, Somerset House, London, from Thursday 30 March to Sunday 3 September 2006.

Byzantine textiles

A section of this exhibition is devoted to early Byzantine textiles and comprises 4th/5th & 6th century textile fragments, the majority of which were bought from Egypt by Vladimir Bock in 1898.

The works on view range from a textile with the Earth Goddess Gaia to the upper part of a tunic with Aphrodite and Eros, both from Egypt, 4th century.

The exhibition has been curated jointly by Professor Robin Cormack, Dr Antony Eastmond and Dr Peter Stewart from the Courtauld Institute of Art, and Dr Anna Trofimova and Dr Vera Zalesskaya from The State Hermitage Museum.
